THE EMPLOYER:
Our client is a Fortune 500 company headquartered in New York City with more than 10,000 worldwide employees. The company is a premier provider of specialized insurance products and related services in North America and selected international markets including the People's Republic of China.
Currently, the company is looking for Legal Counsel to support its young Chinese businesses, based in Beijing.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be the sole on-the-ground legal resource for China within the larger Asian and International practice groups. S/he will report to Senior Counsel (Asia) and focus on supporting commercial and operation departments. Duties include:
- Advising the General Manager of the company's Chinese consulting company, as well as the Chief Representative of it’s Insurance Representative Office
- Performing legal research and analysis of Chinese laws, regulations and other issues
- Contract drafting and negotiation, developing and implementing legal strategies to support the business, researching local laws and legislative initiatives (particularly those affecting the insurance business) and advising the company how to achieve its objectives within those laws, advising on the legal aspects of product development, and providing legal support to various company initiatives in the PRC
- Facilitating knowledge transfer from the North American offices to management and staff in China; ensuring local compliance with key headquarters policies and procedures
REQUIREMENTS:
- PRC bar qualification or any of the following qualification: US, Canada, UK, Australia or New Zealand
- Minimum 7 years experience in the insurance industry, demonstrating increasing responsibility and capacity
- Insurance or other financial services experience, as well as cross-cultural familiarity with both Chinese and western business culture and philosophy
- Competencies: in depth understanding of insurance concepts and regulation; excellent verbal and written language competency in both Mandarin and English; ability to handle multiple projects at one time and meet deadlines; good interpersonal skills and ability to influence internal and external clients to follow legal policies
- Some travel to other offices outside of China will be required
